Question : Is Cupping Therapy/Hijama Safe ? Is it painful & are there any side effects ? How many sessions would I need ?

Answer : Cupping Therapy is absolutely safe and has no side effects whatsoever if done by a well qualified, trained & experienced Doctor. During the wet cupping procedure, a few superficial incisions are made on the surface of the skin to draw out a very little quantity of stagnant blood, pathogenic substances, and malignant fluids. While making these incisions the patient may feel a little pain. However, the cuts as mentioned earlier are superficial and heal quickly. We apply antiseptic ointments on the treated areas to prevent any infection. In very few cases, we have noticed giddiness in the patients for about 5 to 10 minutes after the treatment. This could be probably due to the fact that patients have to be on 2 to 3 hours of fasting prior to the treatment and also sight of their own blood makes them uneasy for a while.

Number of sessions entirely depends on the reason for treatment & varies from person to person again depending upon their medical history & severity of the disease /disorder. However, healthy and fit people  who wish to be treated as a preventive measure may do so once in 3 months.

Question : What should I look for when selecting a Cupping Therapist ?

Answer : It is strictly advised for people to carefully choose a qualified, trained and well experienced Doctor with the history of successful cupping.  Other important factors to be taken into consideration are:

  • Clinic Environment (Hygiene, Cleanliness etc.)

  • Cupping equipment & tools used during the therapy (Sterilisation, Disposable etc.)

  • Post Therapy Practices & Follow-up advises.

Like any other treatment, if cupping therapy is done by an unqualified quack, it may go terribly wrong and could lead to physical/mental trauma, agony & pain. Also, it would be a total waste of time, money, energy & efforts.

Answer : Cupping Therapy is absolutely safe and has no side effects whatsoever if done by a well qualified, trained & experienced Doctor. Prior to the beginning of consultation or cupping therapy procedure, we request the entire medical history of the patient along with the records of past treatments and surgery if any. Only after we are completely satisfied with the current fitness level of the patient, further procedure of Cupping Therapy is carried out.

The time duration of one sitting and the period for entire treatment varies from  person to person and it also depends on the disease, disorders & medical case history of every individual. However, normally 1 sitting of dry cupping with standard 5 cups takes not over 20 minutes. Whereas, wet cupping sitting with standard 5 cups would not take over 30 minutes.
